Welcome to Pension & Cellar
La Teo
located in the heart of the medieval Citadel Sighișoara
Shortly about us
La Teo Pension and Cellar is a family business that took birth more than 24 years ago. We deal with the production of natural distillates according to traditional recipes (the cellar part) and we offer accommodation in a beautiful pension, in the medieval fortress of Sighișoara.
Our story begins in 1996 when, out of the passion for Transylvanian traditions, came the first traditional drinks, which received immediate appreciation. We started to produce distillates (plums, pears, apples, wine brandy and the most amazing forest fruits liqueur one can have) that can be tasted only in our cellar, a beautiful cellar with a 500years old history. And because the customers’ opinion is important to us, we have opened an online store where you can order all these drinks.
A few years later, in the old house formerly called Sachsenheim, 4 chic rooms have been beautifully arranged, which welcome their guests in an intimate and relaxing atmosphere. Starting on the summer of 2021, we are offering our guests 2 freshly renovated rooms in the oldest part of the house, dating from the 15th century. Apart from the history that comes with the place, these rooms are the most spacious and authentic rooms, with details following on the Saxons heritage.
Pension
Pension La Teo is located on the oldest street of the medieval fortress of Sighișoara and it has 6 custom rooms to offer, managing to capture the atmosphere and comfort of former times. Each room is equipped with modern amenities, designed to make guests feel at home.
Formerly called Sachsenheim, the guesthouse is originally a Saxon house with very thick walls and an inner courtyard full of flowers. Judging its position and the thickness of the walls in the basement of the building, archaeologists assume that the origins of the construction date back to the times of the Saxon settlers in the region (14th century). The traces of the great fire of April 30, 1676 are still visible in one of the cellars of the building, where there are still two massive oak beams with strong traces of burns.
The central location of the guesthouse, at the base of the Covered Stairs, allows guests easy access to many restaurants and sights. A few steps from the pension you can visit the towers of tanners, tinsmiths, rope makers, butchers, furriers, tailors, shoemakers, blacksmiths, the entrance gate to the fortress and the fortress wall.
Cellar
The cellar houses brandies, wine and the signature of our cellar, the forest fruits liqueur. The drinks are 100% natural and hold gold, silver and bronze medals at international salons and at the fairs of brandy producers in Romania.
Our family has been producing these drinks for over 200 years, based on traditional recipes from the Târnavelor area, where the Saxons made liqueurs specific to their medieval culture. We keep the brandy in wooden barrels, the minimum aging period being 3 years.
Numerous groups of tourists curious about the history of the place, stop in our cellar where they are invited to taste the variety of products, next to a plate of homemade bread with lard, sprinkled with paprika and onion. Depending on the season, we pamper our tourists with products available for a limited period of time, such as natural organic apple juice or mulled wine.
